ADDRESS: Old Onslow Town Site, Onslow, WA
PROJECT: The interpretive signs for Old Onslow aim to engage visitors and support the ongoing conservation plan for the area. Old Onslow is located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, home to a number of unique natural and cultural heritage features that attract visitors.
In the initial stages of the project we worked with Savagely Creative to identify themes, stories, and media as a part of an overarching interpretation plan for the site. Included in the plan were complete designs with full specifications for an interpretive and directional signage suite. The specifications for the signage took into consideration the harsh conditions of the area (both heat and cyclones) and the difficulty in ongoing maintenance.
The Old Onslow Town site signage aims to ensure the heritage significance can be communicated in a way that makes the site a sustainable tourist attraction. Life-sized silhouettes have been incorporated into some of the signage. These were inspired by the many individual stories of the struggle to establish a community in such an unforgiving environment.
